Lough Inagh Lodge Hotel and FisheryColan Folan reports that needless to say many prayers for rain were answered with great irony IN August. It rained at Inagh every day in August and left the lake and river unfishable for most of the time. High winds also contributed to more hardship for anglers. There was a small run of fresh grilse towards the end of the month, but it is very difficult to tell what was entering due to the height of water disabling the fish counter. Apart from the Derryclare Butts, which was submerged with all the rain, the other river beats are holding good numbers of salmon. Greenpoint seemed to be the place to be with plenty of fresh fish seen there daily.

During August 17 salmon were recorded for the month. Eight were taken on the lake and nine from the river. Top river fly was the Cascade and top lake fly was the Silver Daddy. The best fish was caught on Inagh and released by Harry Oliver(UK), this was Harry's first salmon ever. John Connolly(Mayo) and Nick Geogh(UK) were top rods each catching two fish. Other anglers to score this month included Nigel Kirkman(UK), Mervyn Woods(NI), John Roche(Galway),Clive Martin(Louth), Liam O Connor(Dublin) and Hugh Hardiman(Dublin).
There were 165 sea trout landed in August. Almost all were caught on Inagh. Top flies this month were Silver Daddy, Silver Doctor, Donegal Blue and Kingsmill. Most of the fish weighed between 8 ounces and 2.5 pounds. Declan Conlon (Kildare) had nine Sea Trout for his day on Inagh. The highlight of the month was the visit of the Cornomana and District Anglers annual outing to Inagh. Ten rods recorded 52 sea trout for their day. This was a great return for one days fishing and the presence of red ants that weekend surely helped get the fish excited.

There were 121 Browns were caught this month. Again the lake produced the bulk of the fish. There were no significant fish caught which is strange for Inagh for the past few years. Top flies this month were Green Peter, Bibio and Claret Bumble. A 10 inch Char was caught by John Connolly also and this was the first this year and is a very large char for Inagh.

Lough Inagh Lodge Hotel is running a complete fly fishing course from Friday 23rd - Sunday 25th October 09. The course will deal with fly casting, fly tying, secrets to catching more fish, knots, leaders and all things fishy. The cost for the event is €650 and this includes all equipment, lodgings and meals. Top instructors in attendance and places are limited.

On a side note, a pair of golden eagles are seen most days hovering over Inagh for the last few weeks.
