[ May 2008 ]

Newport HouseDespite very low water conditions during most of May, Lough Beltra and the Newport river fished well. Because of the conditions, the fishing effort was light with many days with no one on the fishery, but of those who ventured out many were successful.
Richard McDowell took a very fresh 7 lb. salmon on Beltra, shortly followed by a 10 lb salmon off the river by Michael Barefield. The Newport Angling club had a good day on Beltra - Shaun O'Malley took two salmon 11lb. and 61/2 lb while Joe Gibbons and Martin Hughes had one each and four salmon were lost. Stephen Jones from Dublin took three salmon on one day on Lough Beltra. The Conn party from London were also successful. Iain Conn had two salmon 91/2 & 8 lbs on Beltra, his son, Cameron ,took trout on the river. Cameron Brandt from the U.S., was also successful on Beltra. Dr.Danny McAllister from U.K took a 9 lb salmon on Beltra and lost a good fish on the river. Fourteen spring fish in total which was good considering the light effort and the conditions.
