[ July 2010 ]

Ballyvolane House & Blackwater Salmon FisheryBy far the best month so far. The long awaited rain arrived causing floods on 11, 16 & 19 July. The river rose and large numbers of summer salmon and grilse ran and continued to run strongly for the remainder of the month. The highlights were Bob Pullcini from Prague grassed four grilse up to 5lb in three days at the beginning of the month all on the fly. Regular guest Martin Lanigan-O’Keeffe took 3 fish (2 fish of 5lb and 1 of 7lb) on 28 July at Kilbarry on the fly. John & Caroline Hamilton also took 3 fish (3lb, 5lb & 8lb) at Upper Kilbarry on 27 July on the fly. Ally’s Shrimp and orange Cascade Shrimp patterns proved the most effective. We are happy to cook any fish caught for dinner or have it smoked so you can enjoy it at home. The prospects for August look good too with fish still running and the conditions are perfect for fly fishing.

Ballyvolane House is running one-day ‘Quickie’ Fishing Courses with qualified instructor Norman Gillet throughout the season. One is aimed at ‘Beginners’ and the other is designed for ‘Improvers’. All tackle and equipment is provided. For more information, please visit www.ballyvolanehouse.ie.
