Fishery Report » Healys Restaurant & Fishing Lodge
[ September 2009 ]
Clare Murray reports that extreme rain and floods hampered fishing on Lough Conn and Cullen at the start of the month. Water levels rose about 4 ft to winter levels. Because of this angling was slow but anglers who braved the elements were rewarded with some nice catches.
As the month progressed water levels began to drop and temperatures began to rise slightly, but fishing was disappointing. Towards the end of the month the weather improved as did the angling. Water levels were still high but the conditions were fair to good.
The 75th Jackson Cup & Prendergast Cup were held on Lough Conn on the 27th of September and the Registration and Weigh in were held at Healys. The Jackson Cup has been running since 1934. For the last number of years the Daughter of the Late Reverend Jackson has presented the Cup to the winner with the Heaviest Trout. Forty anglers fought it out but this years winner was John Walsh, with his Trout weighing in at 1.22lbs. This is the second year running John has won the competition. Second and third place were won by Paul Ruane (1.13lbs) and Martin Keane (1.10lbs) respectively. The junior competition was won by T.J Ruane and Carol Neal took the ladies title.
