Healys Restaurant & Fishing LodgeAt the start of the month angling efforts were good. Fishing out of Gortnorabbey, Ian Wise had one trout just under 2lbs taken on a dry fly, while Padraig Traynor had two trout totalling 3lbs. Fishing out of Kelly’s of Cloghans, Peter Rooney and daughter, had four trout over two days, their best 1.5lbs, while Gerry Fox, Sligo had two trout for 3lbs, while Lawson Clements, also Sligo had two trout for 4lbs. From Pontoon Bridge Hotel, regular visitors from Cavan, Neil Shevlin and Ian Daly enjoyed success catching five trout over two days on Conn and Cullin, all to dry flies, with their best weighing 1.5lbs.

Both a junior and ladies angling competition were held on Lough Conn recently, in conjunction with Crossmolina Annual Festival. In the junior competition, 45 competitors took part, fishing from 22 boats. A total of 32 fish were caught and weighed, ranging from perch to pike and trout. The winner of the competition was David Crean, Cloghans, with a pike of 8.5lbs, second place went to Luke Browne, Brackwansha with a pike of 7.4lbs while third was won by Lorcan Loftus, Crossmolina with a pike of 7.1lbs. In the ladies competition, Merel Taal (originally of Holland) took first with a pike of 6.6lbs, second went to Mary Mulligan, Crossmolina while third went to Caoimhe Loftus also of Crossmolina.

Angling on Lough Conn has been notably quiet for the time of year. However, as always there are a few exceptions to the trend. Angling with the School of Fishing at Pontoon Bridge Hotel, Tom and Lola Jordan had three to wet flies, while Mark Walsh had one on the Green Peter. Regular visitors to Murphy’s of Massbrook, Liam McHugh, Co.Offaly and Mick Sweeney, Loughrea had a total of four trout over two days to wets. In the northern end of the Lough, Padraig Traynor had two trout to wet flies, near Castle Island. Angling out of Cloghans, Sean Creane had one of 2lbs while Joe Quinn had good success, boating five trout for a day’s fishing. The catch of the week on Lough Conn undoubtedly goes to young Ruadhán O'Gráda of Clonskee Co. Dublin, who, while angling under the guidance of Padraic Kelly, Cloghans, hooked and successfully boated a magnificent trout at the mouth of Cloghans Bay weighing 5lbs.

Despite a drop in angling effort, some areas of Lough Conn produced good catches over the week. Participating in the “catch and cook scheme” from Pontoon Bridge, Paul Fearon, Dublin, had one trout while Tom Templeton also of Dublin, had two trout trolling Rapalla lures. James McWalter, U.K. also angling out of Pontoon Bridge had two trout on dry flies.

Angling from Kelly’s Boat Hire, Cloghans, Gerry Scott, Belfast, had two trout of 1lb each, with Martin Cawley, Cloghans, catching two, his best 3lbs taken on a Green Peter in Cloghans Bay.
John Warren had good success on the Abbey shore, boating 5 trout in quick succession on a wet Green Olive pattern.

Lough Conn and Cullin Anglers Association recently held the annual Paddy McDonnell Memorial Cup angling competition. Twenty-two anglers fished the competition, with a total of seven trout caught. Michael Monaghan, Knockmore, won the competition with a trout of 1.9lbs, runner up was Padraig Traynor with a trout of 1.7lbs and third was Dominic McGowen with a trout of 1.5lbs.
