Aasleagh Lodge & River Erriff - August 2010Angling pressure was light on the Fishery during the 1st. week of August. Water levels had dropped from the previous week but still remained very good for angling. Levels were recorded at 1.1 metres on the Aasleagh Guage on the1st. of the month. Rains increased levels to 1.2 meters on the 3rd falling to 0.9 metres on the 7th. Overall levels were above normal summer levels and salmon and sea trout continued to run in on every tide. Mr. Martin Corby, UK fishing the Erriff for the first time caught his first ever salmon weighing 6lbs. in the Garden Pool on Beat 9 on a s.12 Cascade. Mr. Anthony Jarvis, UK caught one 4.25lbs on a Cascade in the Middle Garden Pool on Beat 9 –later in the week Anthony released a grilse of 7lbs. that came straight in off the tide to the Sea Pool. Mrs. Ann Vere-Laurie, UK. fishing the Erriff for the first time had great success catching her first ever salmon in the Falls Pool on a Cascade and had further success later in the day by catching a sparkling fresh grilse of 5.5lbs in the Guage Pool. Mr. Richard Ferens, UK had 3 for the week from the Falls and Lower Garden Pools all to Cascades. Mr. Conor O’Leary Dublin had 2 best 5.5lbs from Jenkins on Beat 5 and the Falls Pool on Beat 9. Conor also returned a sea trout of 1.25lbs taken on a Daddy in Yellow Banks. Local anglers Peter Coyne and Stuart Fleming had one each of 5.5lbs. and 3.5lbs. on an Alley Shrimp and Cascade. Several other salmon were hooked and lost. Total catch for the week was 12 salmon and the sea trout catch was disappointing at just 4 fish. Derrintin Lough produced some 11 brown trout and a further 20 were caught on Tawnyard Lough.

Angling Report 8th. to 14th. August 2010.

Overnight rain on the 8th. increased water levels to 1.2 metres on the Aasleagh Guage – this combined with high tides of 4.9 metres which reached 1.6 metres on the guage brought fresh fish into the river. Overall water levels remained relatively good falling slowly to 0.7 metres by the end of the week. The catch for the week was 24 salmon and 5 sea trout

Mr. Edward Murphy Dublin had 2 from the Garden Pool on a Shrimp fly and Black Pennel. Mr. Kevin Glynn had 2 including one of 8.75lbs from the Sea Pool on Beat 9. Dr. Margaret Downes caught 2 in the Garden Pool on Beat 9 and the Colonel’s Pool on Beat 6. Brian Holloway and Jeremy Makinson, UK. had 2 from Beat 9 taken on Cascades. David Gaffney caught one in the Boat Pool on a Stoats Tail. Ronnie and Nora Tallon, Dublin had 5 and Michael Tallon had one in the Falls Pool. Dr. Patrick Masterson, Dublin had 2 from the Upper and Lower Garden Pools.

Mr. Richard, Daly, Dublin had 2 from Yellow Banks and Nee's Run. Mr. William Beattie, N. Ireland had a 5 lbs fish in the Falls Pool on a Cascade. Mr. Christopher Heaslip, Cork caught one on a Silver Stoat in the Sea Pool. Mr. Peter Gibson, U.K. had one each from the Falls Pool, Guage Pool and Bridge Pool on the last day of the week.

Anglers also had good sport on Tawnyard Lough catching numerous brown trout and a handful of sea trout. The river needs rain again and it looks like it is on the way.


Angling Report 14th. to 20th. August 2010

Waters levels were recorded at 0.65meters on the 15th. Rains increased levels to 1.0m on the 17th. falling to 0.8m on the 18th. increasing again to 1.2m on the 19th. Overnight heavy rainfall on the 19th. and early morning of the 20th. resulted in a spate of 1.8 meters on the Aasleagh Guage. Fresh fish continued to run through the counter and many tourists were able to see the salmon leap at Aasleagh Falls as they attempted to clear the waterfall to continue their migration upstream.

Mr. B. Cotton’s Party, UK. and N. Irl. had 11 fish for the week including 3 for Bertram Cotton at 93 years young all taken on fly with the best at 5lbs. taken in the Horse Shoe on Beat 3 - his wife Sonia caught one of 4.25lbs in the Upper Garden Pool on a Yellow Alley - Mr. John Nelson, had one of 11.75lbs. caught on a cascade in the Falls Pool - Mr. Mark Broughan had 3 - best 6.5lbs. taken on a Shrimp Fly. Mandy Broughan had one taken in Doyle’s Pool on Beat 6 on a Stoats Tail - Margy Crawford had one in the Falls Pool and Mr. Christopher Johnson has one of 7lbs. taken on a Shrimp pattern.

Mr. Albert Caffrey and Mr. Donal Chambers, Athy Co. Kildare released one each from Glenanane Stones on Beat 7. Overall the river was not heavily fished during the period and it was good to see the run of fish continue to build up so that the conservation limit would be reached thus having sufficient salmon to spawn during the winter.


Angling Report 21st. to 28th. August.

Water levels were recorded at 1.5m on the 23rd. Levels fell slowly to 0.7 metres towards the end of the month. Fresh fish continued to run into the river with a lot of fish showing on Beat 9 and at Aasleagh Falls.

Mr. Andrew Beattie UK. on his 2nd visit to the fishery for the season caught 6 fish during the week which gave a total of 17 salmon all on fly in 2 weeks fishing included in the catch was Andrew’s 50th. Erriff Salmon. Mr. Anthony Holden, Dublin also on his 2nd visit to the Fishery this season had 3 taken on Cascades.

Mr. Rene Boutonnet, France had 7 salmon for the week. Mr. Tony O’Regan, Dublin caught 2 on a Claret Shrimp. Emma & Darragh Jones, Dublin had one each from the Bridge Pool and Garden Pool on a Munroe Killer. Mr. David Kirk, Dublin caught a good sea trout of 2lbs. in the Mering Pool on Beat 7. Mr. Hugh Jamison, N.I. had a fresh grilse from the Bridge Pool.

Mr. J. Dardis, Kildare had one from Nees’ Run on Beat 6 on a Cascade. Mr. Paul Newell and Mr. Gerard Murphy had one each from the Bridge and Falls Pool on a Shrimp fly. Mr. Michael Cunnane had one from the Bridge Pool on a Shrimp Fly. Mr. Nick Fenton N. Ireland caught one in the Garden Pool on Beat 9. Total catch for the week was 27 salmon and 6 sea trout.

Anglers also continued to have good sport on Derrintin Lough with Brown Trout. Tawnyard Lough on the sea trout front produced some fish but has as yet really to get going – hopefully fishing will improve in September. Total catch for the month was 77 salmon and 25 sea trout.
