The Fishing
Clonanav’s fisheries are on the River Suir and its tributaries, which offer some of the finest and most challenging dry fly fishing for wild brown trout in Europe. Beats are all within 20 minutes of the Lodge on three different rivers.
The Suir itself is a large limestone river, about 100 foot wide, with a spring creek character; the Nire is a spatey, freestone river about 35 foot wide, with exciting ripple and pool formations; and the Tar is a chalkstream-type spring creek, about 40 foot wide, with abundant flowering weed. All three rivers have gravel bottoms, making wading easy. The average catch is some ten trout per rod per day.
Clonanav has a fly fishing shop, excellent guides and good beat maps. Casting clinics, rental tackle (including waders), drying facilities and all necessary licences and permits are available. Andrew Ryan is a well-known APGAI instructor and he runs the fly-fishing school. The school has excellent facilities, including lakes for beginners, all equipment, course notebooks, and video tuition. Ring for details of special 2-day courses.
